캐나다를 대표하는 여성 싱어송라이터 중 한 명인 샹탈 크레비아주크는

 1973년 5월 18일 캐나다 마니토바(Manitoba)주 위니펙(Winnipeg)에서 'Jennifer Chantal Kreviazuk'라는 이름으로 태어났다.

어린 시절 클래식 피아노로 음악의 기초를 쌓았던 그녀는

십대 시절 관심사를 팝음악으로 돌려 스물 세 살이던 1996년 프로 가수로 정식 데뷔하였다.

"Under These Rocks and Stones"라는 타이틀로 공개된 샹탈의 데뷔 앨범은

'God Made Me', 'Surrounded' 등의 히트 싱글을 배출시키며 캐나다에서만 더블 플래티넘(=20만장)을

 따내는 대성공을 거두었고 그 가속도에 힘입어 미국에서도 10만장의 판매고를 기록했다.

샹탈 크레비아주크가 북미권 신인가수에서 월드스타로 도약하게 된 계기는

 1998년 존 덴버(John Denver) 원곡의 'Leaving on a Jet Plane'를 리메이크한 것이었다.

 

 

 

 포크풍의 잔잔한 목소리와 스트링/하모니카 세션이 두드러진 이 리메이크 곡은

당시 최고의 블록버스터였던 "Armageddon"에 수록, 에어로스미스(Aerosmith)의 'I Don't Want To Miss a Thing'에 이은

두 번째 싱글로 커트되면서 세계적인 관심을 끌었던 것이다.

상업적 성공과 정열적인 음악활동이 楮痍?嗤庸?샹탈은 1999년 마침내 인생의 반려자를 만나는 행운을 얻었는데

그 인물은 얼터너티브 씬의 대표주자인 아우어 레이디 피스(Our Lady Peace)의 레인 메이더(Raine Maida)였다.

 그해 발매된 샹탈의 서포모어 앨범 "Colour Moving and Still"은 레인과의 공동작업이 담긴 결과물로,

커플 특유의 '사랑의 힘'을 보여주듯 전작보다 한층 안정된 사운드를 연출해보였다.

 

 

2002년작 "What If It All Means Something"을 발매한 후로 레이 레노(Jay Leno)의 토크쇼에 출연하는 등
